Perinatal or Postpartum Mood and Anxiety Disorders (PMADs) are experienced by many women, and in fact can also be experienced by their partners. About 10-20% of women experience postpartum depression or anxiety and about 10% of fathers experience postpartum depression; this can be extremely difficult to experience when parents are expected to be happy and joyful about their new baby. Being well informed on the signs and symptoms of PMADs can be helpful in finding early diagnoses and interventions. Oftentimes mothers do not recognize these symptoms in themselves, so having partner support is essential in early identification. Effective screening tools in doctors' offices are also important, but often are not high quality and can miss many women that aren’t “visibly” struggling. Advocating for your own mental health is essential in finding help and in the healing process.
